After receiving the biggest salary in women’s tennis history, Elena Rybakina refused to take a photo with Portia Archer, CEO of the WTA Tour.
Rybakina, the 2022 Wimbledon champion, defeated world number one Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets in the final tournament of the women’s tennis season on Saturday.
But the 26-year-old Kazakh, who rose to No. 5 in the world after the win – which netted her £3.98million in prize money – broke up with Sabalenka and Archer during the post-match celebrations, despite being asked to join them.
Why?
Rybakina refused to reveal her motives, even though the incident comes at the end of the season in which the WTA issued the suspension of her coach, Stefano Vukov.
Vukov was suspended earlier this year after he was found to have breached the WTA Code of Conduct, following an independent investigation into his conduct towards the player.
At the Australian Open in January, Rybakina criticized the WTA, saying she “didn’t agree with a lot of things” the governing body was doing regarding its working relationship with Vukov.
Rybakina confirmed that she had never been mistreated by the 38-year-old Croatian.
Vukov denied any wrongdoing and, after his ban was lifted in August, was present when Rybakina triumphed in the ATP Finals.
