Social network X is bringing its messaging service, called X Chat, to a standalone app. The initial beta version of the X Chat app has become available to 1,000 users through Apple’s TestFlight testing platform, the company said on Monday.
The pilot program reached full capacity two hours after the announcement. According to an X post by xAI product designer Michael Boswell, the company will expand the beta beyond the initial 1,000 users “soon,” though he did not provide an ETA.
“For the past few months, we’ve been quietly building a standalone X Chat app for iOS. Use it. Break it. We want your feedback,” Boswell wrote on X.
X Chat is X’s upgraded version of the DM (direct messaging) feature found in X, which the company claims is end-to-end encrypted. However, security experts have warned potential users that X Chat is less secure than other encrypted messaging apps, such as Signal, and should not be trusted. It’s not clear if the company has addressed the security community’s concerns with the standalone app.
The introduction of the app represents a clear shift from X owner Elon Musk’s previous plan to make X an “everything app,” which would provide access to messaging, payments, creator content, and more, centralizing all aspects of the service.
A group of early testers have begun sharing screenshots of the app’s interface. One user said that the beta version of the app has styled the name as xChat instead of X Chat, which could indicate a possible rebranding. Others began sharing screenshots of the app, such as the login screen with a starry background.
Early adopters describe the app as having a simpler, smoother interface to use than X Chat. The current version of the app doesn’t include message requests, but Boswell says it’s being rebuilt now.
