XAI puts interplanetary ambitions within everyone’s reach

The most pressing revelation concerned a series of employee departures, which Musk described as layoffs resulting from a change in the company’s organizational structure. While reorganizations are common, the breadth of departures has caused significant confusion, especially since it means the loss of a significant portion of the founding team.

“As a company grows, especially at the speed of xAI, its structure has to evolve,” Musk said on X. “This has unfortunately required parting ways with some people. We wish them well in their future endeavors.”

The new organizational system divides xAI into four core teams: one focused on the Grok chatbot (including voice), another for the app’s coding system, another for the Imagine video generator, and finally a team focused on the Macrohard project, which extends from simple computer usage simulations to modeling entire companies.

All Hands also included claims about new usage and revenue numbers for xAI and X. Nikita Beer, head of X products, said X had “just surpassed” $1 billion in annual recurring revenue from subscriptions, which he attributed to a marketing push during the holidays.

Additionally, executives said xAI’s Imagine tool produces 50 million videos per day, and more than 6 billion photos over the past 30 days, according to their internal metrics.

The most striking part of the presentation came at the end, when Musk reiterated the importance of space-based data centers despite the technical challenges involved. Musk went further, envisioning a lunar factory for AI satellites, including a lunar mass drive — essentially an electromagnetic catapult — to launch them. Through this infrastructure, Musk said, one could launch an AI cluster capable of capturing large portions of the solar’s total energy production or even expanding to other galaxies.

“It’s hard to imagine what an intelligence of this size would think, but it would be very exciting to see it happen,” Musk said.
