💡 **What You’ll Learn**:
As companies troubleshoot their AI systems, governance has emerged as a key challenge. Some take a dual approach: one model handles incoming queries, while the second keeps the first from getting into trouble.
That’s the premise of ZeroDrift, a new AI compliance service that announced a $10 million seed round on Tuesday. (Investors include a16z Speedrun, Reign Ventures, PitchDrive Ventures, and U&I Ventures, among others.) The second part of the system is entirely handled by the company, sitting between AI models and end users to flag and replace any messages that might pose a compliance issue.
It may seem strange to build an AI system to debug other AI systems, but ZeroDrift’s debugging system has some architectural advantages over the models it will debug. The system is powered by traditional software that unavoidably applies known compliance standards such as SOC 2 or GDPR. LLM only comes up once you mark a message, and rewrite a compatible version of the same message.
“We are able to determine deterministically, what are all the areas that are regulated, what are the violations that are broken, and then we have LLMs who can rewrite,” says Arumogan.
Most importantly, the entire system can be run with lower latency and greater reliability than a traditional MBA. It’s the company’s main advantage over larger labs like OpenAI and Anthropic, which are often already built into the platform.
The most obvious use case is AI-powered chatbots, which are already deployed in front of consumers where there can be dire consequences for rogue answers. But Arumogan sees the total addressable market as much larger, potentially including AI-generated messages that are never seen by humans, and are generated only within automated systems. So far, this market is still relatively small, but it is a market that will grow as AI spreads.
If the fundraiser is any indication, there’s a lot of pent-up demand for this product. “This was probably the fastest fundraising I’ve ever done,” says CEO Kumesh Arumugan, crediting Andreessen Horowitz’s help in organizing the seed round. “We close within three weeks, and we will be oversubscribed by 3 times the amount.”
