✅ Key idea:
AOnce Upon a Time is another highly competent and passably but not overwhelmingly funny family comedy, featuring digital animation and featuring talking animals. It’s not artificial intelligence, but it might be. This is Zootropolis 2, which is called Zootopia 2 in its US home country. (Is a reference to leftist ideas like “utopia” too dangerous for all-important foreign territories?) If this is the second in what promises to be an ongoing series, Z3 might be cautiously welcomed as a return to the franchise’s “dark” roots.
We are back in the magical wonderland of Zootropolis, where all the animals live together, great and small, prey and predators; A place, in fact, where the comedic lion can lounge with the funny lamb, and all the animals provide indulgent voice-over work for comedic talent like Alan Tudyk, who appears in a cameo. As before, our heroes are an odd couple of cops in the ZPD or Zootropolis Police Department: the idealistic young rabbit Judy Hopps (geddit?), voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin, and the malicious fox Nick Wilde, voiced by Jason Bateman, a creature who was once on the wrong side of the law but is now a supposedly reformed character who has joined the police.
Together, Hobbs and Wilde must tackle an apparent crime committed by Snake, the only type of animal not welcome in Zootropolis. This snake appears to have stolen a journal belonging to the aristocratic Lynx family who are the founding fathers of the city, a journal detailing the creation of “weather walls” that provide many different climates within the city, allowing different animals to live there. But their investigations uncover secrets, lies, and a conspiracy that, of course, reaches the top.
There are some laughs in the Z2: of course there are. But they are algorithmically generated and approved by the company. It’s the kind of movie you put on your iPad to keep the kids quiet on a long plane or train ride; There’s nothing wrong with that, of course, but the heart and soul are missing.
