β Main takeaway:
Jean-Philippe Mattita
The star of the show in Saturday’s six-goal thriller at Selhurst Park was Jean-Philippe Mateta, the in-form Frenchman’s hat-trick against Bournemouth meaning he reached the 50-goal mark in the Premier League for the Eagles, thanks to 43 goals and eight assists (51 in total).
The striker has scored two of Palace’s three Premier League hat-tricks and, thanks to a late penalty, was the first player to score his third goal of the match thanks to a 90th-minute equalizer since Somin Choi in May 2011 for West Bromwich Albion against Newcastle United.
Unfortunately, Mateta’s hat-trick was not enough to earn all three points for the hosts, and in doing so he became the first player to score a home hat-trick in the Premier League and not win since Andy Carroll in April 2016 in West Ham’s 3-3 draw against Arsenal.
Overall, Mateta had six big chances in the match (scoring three goals), which is the most chances scored in a Premier League match (since 2010-11).
Danny Welbeck
He may be in the twilight of his career, but 34-year-old Danny Welbeck shows no signs of slowing down.
Against Newcastle on Saturday, the veteran Brighton striker scored the winning brace to take his tally to four goals in his last three Premier League matches, more than in his previous 15 appearances in the competition combined (three).
The former Manchester United and Arsenal player’s recent goals tend to be game-changers, with 12 of his past 13 Premier League goals either putting the Seagulls ahead (nine, including two at the weekend) or drawing the game level (three), with five of those goals being winners.
Welbeck has Jorginio Rutter to thank for setting up one of his goals against the Magpies, with four of the Dutchman’s five Premier League assists for Brighton going to the former England striker, with all four putting Brighton ahead in the game.
In an impressive all-round display, Welbeck also created three combined goal chances for his teammates.
Erling Haaland
It wouldn’t be a Premier League weekend without another strong display from Erling Haaland, as the unstoppable Manchester City striker was among the goals again on Saturday against Everton.
The Norwegian scored his 10th (and 11th) Premier League goal this season, and it was the third closest (MD8) a player has come to reaching double figures in a season in the competition, and, you guessed it, Haaland himself is also responsible for the other two (MD5 in 2022-23, MD6 in 2024-25).
With 11 Premier League goals already under his belt, Haaland has, incredibly, scored as many goals or more than 12 of the 19 other teams in the competition this season.
It was Haaland who thanked Savinho for setting up one of his goals on Saturday, with the player providing seven of Manchester City’s 12 assists in all competitions. Since the start of last season, only Jacob Murphy has provided assists to a specific teammate more often among Premier League teams (nine, for Alexander Isak at Newcastle).
