But this time Scotland’s joint record goalscorer is on the bench, having missed the All Blacks clash despite celebrating his 50th cap with two tries in the opening autumn series win over the USA.
His Edinburgh team-mate Graham, who shares the record with Van der Merwe, has fond memories of facing Argentina after going three tries to win 52-29 the last time the two sides met in 2022.
“He’s had some injuries, to play 50 caps and to be one of the best goalscorers in our history says something about his ability when he gets those opportunities but also about how he responds to injuries,” Townsend said.
“He has improved his game as well. When he first arrived, he was very difficult to defend because of his movement and strength, but he has added a lot to his game.”
Graham featured for the British and Irish Lions as a late call-up for the summer tour of Australia.
“He really deserved it with what he’s done for us over the last few years, and now that he’s played his 50th game, it’s going to be a special day for him,” Townsend said.
Argentina head to Murrayfield after beating Wales 52-28 at the weekend, and Townsend said the Scots must be at their best to beat a team who appear to be on an upward trajectory.
“They are a great team,” he added. “They beat New Zealand this year.
“They’ve played I think 10 or 11 Test matches since the summer and they’ve shown their quality throughout that period. Even in the recent matches, they’ve pushed South Africa close to Twickenham.
“They had a record win last week over Wales, so they are full of confidence and very composed. They are playing a brand of rugby that is fun to watch, and this will test our defence. They certainly look like one of the best teams in rugby right now.”
