Mann started the United Rugby Championship (URC) in impressive form for Cardiff after starting both summer tests in Japan at the blindside.

He now makes his first international move to the open side after playing there just twice for URC last season.

There are question marks over Mann’s suitability to play at blindside against heavy hitters, but the 6ft 3in, 16st 2lb forward undoubtedly has attractive attributes.

“He has flexibility in the way he plays,” said Tandy, who was a fighter in his playing days.

“He has athletic ability, ball skills, but also his energy levels in terms of how he gets out of the backfield.

“He makes people fall to the ground, he’s a jackal threat and has the ability to get off the line. He’s an all-rounder who can play in the back row.”

Mann has worn the back six six times in international rugby to go along with two appearances off the bench.

“It’s just a number, whatever the coaches ask me to do, I make sure I give 100% so it doesn’t matter to me,” the 23-year-old from Aberdare said.

Wales may not replace Morgan, but the starting trio – plus substitutes Freddie Thomas and Tyne Plumtree – aim to soften the blow.
