Former World Darts Championship semi-finalist Dave Chisnall suffered a second-round exit at Alexandra Palace following a 3-2 defeat to Germany’s Ricardo Petrichko.
Chisnall, ranked 21st in the world, shot Petrichko 11 minutes and 180 seconds to nothing and came back from a 2-0 deficit to impose the fifth set, but the German player won the deciding set to set up a third-round match with Swede Andreas Harrison after Christmas.
Nine of Chisnall’s best goals came from 2-0 down, but after the Englishman missed a dart on the 16th double on 143 to seal victory, Petrichko made it three games in a row.
Meanwhile, Dirk van Duijvenbode, ranked 29th in the world, lost 3-2 to Englishman James Hurrell.
Hurrell, who lost the first set, will face world number four Stephen Ponting or Indian Nitin Kumar in the next round, who will meet on Saturday evening.
20th seed Ryan Searle started this year’s second round with a commanding 3-0 win over Brendan Dolan of Northern Ireland.
Searle averaged 98.67 and hit nine of his 14 doubles attempts to knock out two-time quarter-finalist Dolan.
Harrison booked his place in the last 32 with a comfortable 3-0 win over fellow tournament debutant Motomo Sakai.
Earlier in the day, Scottish teenager Mitchell Lowry won the JDC World Youth Championship with a 5-2 win over Kaya Baysal.
